The 208 is available under Peugeot's innovative 'Just Add Fuel' deal, which means all basic costs - including finance, insurance cover, servicing, VED and breakdown - are met for three years in exchange for a deposit and a monthly fee. For a newbie driver, this takes a lot of hassle out of those early years.

Despite VW's emissions-rigging issues, the Polo is still regarded as a very economical car - particularly the petrol version. But what sets the Polo apart is the superb build quality both inside and out, excellent comfort and a spacious cabin. Of course, it's not the cheapest car on this list, but it's certainly one of the best.

The i10 is a little dreary compared to some on this list, but in terms of practical considerations, it does very well. With a five-year warranty, good reliability and a claimed 65.7mpg, this is a sensible, if slightly un-fun choice.
