When it comes to safe, secure driving, there are a few simple rules to follow. Know the law as regards the road, ensure your vehicle is well maintained and of course get the right breakdown cover. From entry level policies to personal cover for car breakdown situations in which you may not be in your own vehicle – there are a many to choose from.
But one aspect of driving that tends to get little attention is that of the driving shoe.
In recent years there have been a number of special shoes developed that combine style and road safety – but you don't need to invest in these to get a good driving shoe. A normal shoe can do the trick – it just has to be the right one.
It's important to choose a shoe whose sole is not too thick; a thinner sole will enable you to feel the pedal better. Equally, you should not choose a shoe that is too wide – it might cause you to touch the other pedals by mistake.
So high heels and thick soles are to be avoided (the platform wedge is definitely out), but so are flip-flops, as they can get caught under the pedal.
The ideal solution is arguably the moccasin, which ensures you can feel the pedal through the shoe – and it is little wider than your foot. They also have the added advantage of being suitable for use outside the car as well as in it.
So the next time you eye up those high heels before you set off in your car, think about slipping on a a pair of good driving shoes for the journey.
