Snow covered Llanberis Pass, Snowdonia, North Wales

With motorways criss-crossing the British landscape and connecting all major destinations, it's easy to forget the natural beauty that exists beyond. So why not stray from the path for one of these unforgettably scenic driving routes?

Conwy to Portmeirion, Wales

Snowdonia National Park is an excellent driving experience. Striking out from the historic Conwy Castle in the north to the colourful west-coast seaside town of Portmeirion, this extraordinarily scenic route takes in views of crystal clear lakes, diverse vegetation and wildlife, as well as, of course, the stunning peak of Snowdon itself.

There are plenty of little towns and detours to explore along the way, including a trip on the summit train from Llanberis, as well as dozens of roadside lakes to stop at for picnics or summertime dips.

Belfast to Derry, Northern Ireland

Ditching the A6 route between Belfast and Derry for the coastal road from Larne rewards drivers with a beautifully diverse experience of Northern Ireland. Passing through valleys, woodland and finally sea views to the north, there's also plenty to see en route. Highlights include a trip to Carrickfergus Castle, a pub lunch in Ballycastle and a walk at the world-famous Giants Causeway, one of the most unique and unusual natural wonders in the world.

Cheddar Gorge, England

The B3135 in Somerset winds a magical course through the craggy cliffs and ravines of Cheddar Gorge, eventually opening out after a narrow 3-mile climb to a stunning vista of Somerset.

For a simple scenic drive, the best time to go is in the early morning before the road gets busy. But for more of a day out, Cheddar Gorge has a lot to offer, including rock climbing lessons for various skill levels and explorations of the prehistoric caves.

These are just a few of the many scenic routes the UK has to offer, and the A82 through the Scottish Highlands deserves an honourable mention. So next time you take a journey, consider steering off the motorway and picking up the A-Z.
