A Glaswegian mechanic who had his car stolen in broad daylight has successfully recovered his vehicle after turning to social media.
It took Jamie Rooney, 22, just 12 hours to find his Peugeot 206, which was taken by a man posing as a buyer.
Rooney, owner of the Gorbals Tyre Centre, let the man have a look at the silver car. The man appeared interested in buying it and wanted to check the brakes. Rooney agreed, and moved his van out of the way as it had been blocking the Peugeot in.
However, the would-be buyer took the opportunity to speed off over the pavement and down the road, leaving Rooney speechless.
The mechanic called the police who said they would investigate. But Rooney took matter into his own hands by posting a message on Facebook, asking his 2,300 friends to keep an eye out for the stolen car.
According to The Daily Record, Rooney said: “The guy was definitely from Glasgow, so I posted a message asking if anyone had seen the car.
“Within hours, someone contacted me on Facebook to say they had just seen it being driven erratically on Dumbarton Road.”
Another Facebook user then saw the missing 206 in Whiteinch, where it had allegedly driven off from a petrol station forecourt without paying, hitting another car.
After being contacted by Rooney, police officers were dispatched to apprehend the driver, and recover the stolen car.
Rooney said: “I’d like to thank everyone who shared the photo of my stolen car on Facebook and who contacted me when they spotted it being driven erratically – especially my mates Paul Robertson, Matt Moffat and his girlfriend Demi Cairns.
“They followed the car then called cops and waited by it until police showed up to arrest the guy.”
