Having launched a cap at Hamilton in Austin, Texas, Nico Rosberg failed to follow up with a (potentially more painful) sombrero after the action-packed Mexico Grand Prix. The Englishman had shunted his German teammate on the first corner of the US leg, prompting the furious cap incident: 'Lewis Hamilton was aggressive, he took it too far,' said Rosberg.

Rosberg’s anger at the Austin incident (which put paid to his title hopes) was perhaps reduced by his first place finish in Mexico; no headgear was tossed in Hamilton’s direction.

But whether or not Rosberg’s fury resurfaces, Hamilton has the season in the bag – meaning he has now completed a hat-trick of championships (2008, 2014 and 2015).

However, if Rosberg tosses headgear towards Hamilton in Brazil (a bandana?) and Adu Dhabi (a headscarf?), he might at least manage a ‘hat trick hat-trick’.

But squabbles with Rosberg won't be on Hamilton's mind as the Brazilian Grand Prix approaches. With his victory in Russia the 30-year-old Briton equalled the 41 race wins of his childhood hero Ayrton Senna. If he secures a win in Brazil – a feat which has so far eluded him – Hamilton will see it as a personal "salute" to Senna.

Senna won his home race on two occasions.

"This was the home race for Ayrton, so it was a dream of mine to race in São Paulo when I was younger and I always feel his presence when I'm there," Hamilton said.

"He was such a huge hero in Brazil and it's humbling that I always get such a warm response there. It's amazing to think that it took Ayrton eight attempts to win this race and it's one of the few I haven't yet won myself.

"If I can change that this weekend it would be a salute to him and another highlight to add to this amazing year, so I'll be going all out to make that happen."

Revenge in Rio?

However, Rosberg might dearly love to knock Hamilton’s plans for the Brazil GP ‘into a cocked hat’ – and grab another consolation prize to accompany his emphatic Mexico win.

Despite the drivers and constructors championships having both been sealed, the second South American Grand Prix – not to mention the finale in Abu Dhabi – will surely throw up a few surprises to ‘cap’ the season off.
