Calling Richard Hammond's recent YouTube video 'low key' might be putting it mildly, but it has nevertheless racked up well over half a million hits - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z3Q3OzIJRY.
It opens with Hammond lying on a wall in his farm, shouting 'Bored!' at the sky.
Then our diminutive ex-Top Gear presenter has an idea. He hitches a trailer to his Land Rover, tells his dog to get in the back and heads up to the Lake District.
The full video is over 10 minutes long and features Hammond involved in some quiet farm activity. He then rounds up some elusive sheep and enjoys a few beers in the pub.
While some may regard Hammond's video as rather boring, it arguably acts as a great advert for the Lake District; there are some stunning shots of Lake Windermere covered in mist.
And there is quite an amusing twist at the end.
The video appears to have been inspired by James May's YouTube videos, which also drive home the point that he is very bored without his Top Gear job. However, in terms of production values, Hammond's clip is way ahead.
On the other hand, James May’s “Green Sleeves with a hangover” has clocked up more views than Hammond’s clip – with more than 644,000 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0muUZTKCeBg).
The optimist might regard the cancellation of Top Gear as rather unimportant now. After all, it looks like the TG trio might start making content by themselves, for free. It might not please the BBC, but it would make millions of Top Gear fans very happy indeed.
Of course, there is one person missing from this ‘YouTube-off’.
Come on Jeremy, show us what you've got!
