The BBC's new car-based game show caper The Getaway Car has divided TV reviewers nationwide. Set for a 12-episode run on prime time Saturday night TV, the Beeb obviously think it has legs – or wheels. But some are saying this could be the Corporation's next Eldorado. So is The Getaway Car original if silly automotive entertainment? Or is it destined for the scrap heap?
The Telegraph’s Michael Hogan wasn’t won over, calling the format flawed and show poorly paced. He thought that Dermot O'Leary – poached from ITV by the Beeb so recently – was wasted on the show. In addition the £10,000 top prize was considered 'stingy' by Hogan. He did, however, praise Auntie for keeping the 'Stig brand'. As Hogan points out, the silent helmeted one stands around with arms folded a good deal.
The Radio Times' Emma Daly says The Getaway Car is “fun family entertainment to drive away the January blues". Daly thought the 10 grand top prize was "peachy", as well as there were some "moments of brilliant awkwardness" between the romantically involved contestants. Daly also thinks there should be a celebrity version. So, impressive stuff from the Radio Times – although it is part-owned by the BBC!
However, the Western Morning News is unaffiliated with the Corporation and they made it their Pick of the Day when it went out. Again Dermot and Stig were the two big plus points for the West Country’s popular daily.
John Woodhouse of the Stoke Sentinel was less enthused in his review, which he titled 'Get me away from The Getaway Car'.
