The way British companies seem to be being snapped up by all manner of international corporations these days, it’s hard to imagine that any brand or symbol is safe. You would be forgiven, then, for breaking into a cold sweat when the Nationwide building society announced it was ending its 11 year sponsorship deal with the England Football team. Would our national team be being supported by far eastern electronics giant? An American oil corporation? A mightly German car manufacturer? Those concerned can now breathe a sigh of relief, kind of, since Vauxhall has announced it is to sponsor the team.
No matter what you think about the Vauxhall brand, at least it has its roots in these islands. Whether you’ve owned a few and found you had to call your vehicle recovery provider a few too many times, or whether you’ve had many years of happy driving experiences with these cars – it is undeniably a brand that brings with it a lot of tradition.
The brand is of course owned by America’s GM, but this shouldn’t be a big surprise. It has owned the company since way back in 1925, only 22 years after the company started making cars. Nowadays it is Britain’s second most popular car brand, so it seems fitting that it should appear on England football shirts.
But will the car brand help England take their corners a little better? Will it give them the innovation and pace they need to succeed on the football pitch? Will they break down on the road to victory? Or will Vauxhall just provide the vehicle recovery service for taking our battered players back to Blighty after ignominious defeat? Only time will tell.
