Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost Car Breakdown Cover.
Those of you who commute into the UK’s major cities for work will be familiar with the free newspaper Metro. I regularly write motoring articles for it and the latest one is about the race between manufacturers to launch the first car capable of breaking the magic 100mpg mark. It will happen very shortly with hybrids, but my report focuses on models with a good old-fashioned combustion engine under the bonnet. We’re not far away; the current champ is the Smart ForTwo diesel at 85.6mpg.
One of the products likely to get very close to three-figure fuel economy is the road-going version of the UP! concept, pictured above and shown by Volkswagen a couple of years ago. It will be on sale by this time next year and sit below the Polo as the brand’s entry model.
There’s speculation it will revive the Lupo name axed in 2005.
All well and good. But here’s the thing; VW has decided there will also be versions of the car bearing Skoda and SEAT badges. Both are part of the VW Group family and both need new small cars to fit under the Fabia and Ibiza respectively. I think this decision may cause VW a problem. Given the rise in popularity of both these brands in recent years, given small cars appeal to younger buyers more interested in fashion but who traditionally have less money, and given the VW will be the most conservative and most expensive of the three, I wonder how many VW will actually sell in the UK? I think a fair chunk of the very people the car is aimed at will go for the Skoda or SEAT versions. I know I would.
