February is traditionally a slow month in the motor trade, but this year sales figures surpassed the same month last year by 3 per cent.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) 68,736 units were sold over the month in total, with more expected in March as buyers await the new registration year.
The top ten best selling cars were as follows
1) Fiesta: 4,415
The perennial favourite is in at number one again, having been a regular on the best-sellers list since it was introduced in 1976. 16 million units have been sold around the world.
2) Vauxhall Corsa: 3,138
Another regular near the top of the best-sellers list is the Corsa. The car is built in Germany, Spain and Belarus
3) Vauxhall Astra: 2,707
The Astra has been in production since 1979 and shows no sign of losing its popularity.
4) Ford Focus: 2,566
In the UK, this popular car replaced the Escort in 1998.
5) Volkswagen Golf: 1,628
This car first hit Europe's roads in 1974.
6) Volkswagen Polo: 1,450
VW's classic supermini has been around since 1975.
7) Mercedes-Benz C-class: 1,231
One of the younger designs on the list, first released in 1993.
8) Vauxhall Insignia: 1,164
This large family car was first sold in 2008.
9) Audi A3: 1,148
The small family car is still selling well.
10) BMW 3-Series: 1,085
This compact executive class car has been with us since 1975.
