Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost Car Breakdown cover.
Looking forward to Wednesday of this week when I shall be spending time with some experts in the field of vehicle security. Auto Express magazine has asked me to write a feature exposing some of the myths associated with breaking into and stealing cars. I’ve suggested we start with one of the oldest and best-known; that if you chop a tennis ball in half, you can use it to create a vacuum of air over a car’s door lock and hitting the ball will then pop the lock. Does it work? Definitely not. But did it ever? That’s more interesting and I’m keen to find out the answer.
What’s really fascinating to me is where these theories come from. I remember a tale from two or three years ago where someone, somewhere in South Wales, talked about how parts from Ford audio systems could be used to manipulate your TV signal at home and you could suddenly get channels for free. Sounds far-fetched doesn’t it? Yes, of course it does. But that didn’t stop the region’s criminals busting into 150 Fords over a sustained period in their quest for the relevant components. Bizarre but true.
My hosts for the day are the engineers at Thatcham, the car insurance industry’s research centre which is based in the village of the same name in Berkshire. The team there has come with a variety of other tricks which supposedly work, but my guess is many of them won’t. I’ll let you know how I get on in a future posting.
