A significantly updated Mazda MX-5 has been unveiled, featuring dramatic overhauls on both the inside and outside.
Lovers of Alfa-Romeo styling may perhaps note something of the Italian carmaker's touch here – and with good reason. Fiat, which owns Alfa Romeo, has developed the new MX-5 alongside Mazda.
Rumours had it that Fiat was considering releasing its new version of the car (there will be versions from both Mazda and Fiat) with an Alfa Romeo badge, but now it is likely to bear a Fiat or Abarth logo.
A selection of four-cylinder Skyactiv units will be available in the new Mazda – engines that have already been seen in Mazda's family vehicles.
It is thought that the new car will feature a 200bhp engine, but that Mazda will be open to giving aftermarket tuners the ability to upgrade these units.
Manual and automatic versions of a six speed gearbox will be available with the new car.
The new model enjoys a much lower centre of gravity thanks in part to weight reduction in the form of an aluminium bonnet, front wings, boot lid and bumper mountings. The engine has been moved backwards beyond the front wheels, all of which should add up to a better balanced car.
Pronounced wheel arches and a growling front emphasise the MX-5's fun personality and sporty heritage, while bringing something new and exciting to the model.
Those among our vehicle breakdown customers who have had their interest piqued by the new MX-5 will be able to buy one in the spring of 2015 for under £20,000.
