Okay, it’s not exactly summer yet, but it certainly felt like it recently. As soon as the better weather comes along, many of us find there is a sudden necessity to improve ourselves. Most of these necessities revolve around not looking fat and pasty for our summer holidays. One activity in particular seems to be popular among the people I know – namely ditching the car and going to work by bicycle instead.
So what are the advantages of such a brave step? Well, if you ever need vehicle recovery for your bike, it would probably come in the form of the bicycle pump that’s already attached to the frame. But the big bonus is the fact that you not only get to work for free, but get fit in the process. It certainly is a great way to burn those calories.
That’s all great, but are there any drawbacks? There are quite a few as I discovered to my dismay when I tried it last week. The first is that it’s only a good idea when the weather is fine – and in this country, that is never certain. The next issue, and quite an important one if you have to deal with people as part of your job, is that you turn up to work all sweaty and later on tend to smell not-so-good. And lastly, after a hard day’s work, sometimes the last thing I want to do is do a cycle marathon home.
With all this in mind, I’m a little ashamed to say that I’ve reverted back to trusty old car, with its heating, its Radio 2 and its wonderfully designed rain-repellent roof.
Maybe I’ll start cycling next week. Maybe.
