Despite his current comatose condition, former Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher is being sued for allegedly failing to give way to a motorcyclist on a roundabout, which resulted in Schumacher crashing into him.
The incident is said to have occurred just weeks before the F1 star sustained a head injury in a ski accident, which has left him in a coma.
The Spanish motorcyclist who made the complaint said he was on a roundabout on Bormujos, near Seville, when the crash happened.
Schumacher allegedly knocked the Spaniard off his bike, causing him a broken wrist and damaging the man’s watch, clothes and motorbike.
Schumacher, who has been in a medically induced coma since a serious ski accident on December 29 2013, was allegedly driving an Audi A4 at the time of the motorbike incident, which took place on November 17 2013.
A Spanish police report said the 45-year old German failed to respect the motorcyclist's right of way, although poor lighting on the approach to the roundabout was also blamed.
Meanwhile, the F1 driver is said to be making some progress. Earlier this month Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm said, 'He shows moments of consciousness and awakening.
'We are on his side, together with the team of the hospital in Grenoble, and we keep remaining confident.'
As many of our motorbike breakdown insurance customers will be aware, being visible on the road can be a challenge for motorcyclists. Thankfully the brighter weather we're having should help make riders easier to see for other road users at this time of year, but the Schumacher incident, if true, is a reminder to take extra care and wear bright clothes when lighting is poor.
Other visibility safety tips include:
- Beware of drivers’ blind spots
- Always use lights when it gets darker
- Ensure there is a safe distance between you and other road users.
