I’ve never really been attracted to go karting. It didn’t look very exciting – great for kids – but surely not so great for adults. It was with this attitude that I tried the sport out with some friends recently, and I have to admit that I have changed my mind.
These little go karts are pure simplicity; a lawn mower engine, four wheels and an acceleration pedal (oh, and a tank of petrol between your legs).
There was also a brake pedal, but I only found out where it was after spinning out half a dozen times. And if the engine stops for any reason, some helpful gent simply comes along and pulls the cord for you; breakdown cover is not required.
I suppose the top speed of these little contraptions cannot be very high, but when you’re literally inches from the ground, they certainly seem it.
The version I tried was protected with a wrap-around plastic bumper, which comes in very handy when you have friends such as I.
The hardest thing to get into your mind is that it is virtually impossible to roll the kart, since its centre of gravity is so low.
Despite my best efforts, after two sets of ten laps, I did end up bringing up the rear. With hindsight I see that the trick is to hardly ever take your foot off the pedal (only on the very sharpest bends) and not to be intimidated by other drivers who think they’re on the dodgems.
The entire experience was a lot more fun than I had thought it would be, and I certainly recommend giving it a go if you haven’t already.
I have to admit it was quite pricey given the amount of time spent on track, but as a special treat – for young or old – it can’t really be bettered.
