Since 2011 the Evoque's unique blend of unorthodox yet attractive styling and powerful, sporty handling has made it a hit from Shoreditch to Shanghai. Coming from the Land Rover fold – the originator of the 4x4 – has helped pique global interest too, and has had the Merseyside plant working overtime for many months.

But no car stays at the top of its class forever, and the Evoque's time as a leading player in the global SUV market may be in jeopardy with the arrival of the Porsche Macan.

Of course, Porsche is no failure at building great four-wheel drive vehicles: the Cayenne and Panamera were both very successful, and the German marque proved it could inject its sports car DNA into off-roaders too.

But critics have been particularly impressed by the Macan, which is at home in the city as it is on the track. This combination of a spacious family car and truly sporty performance makes the Macan a great all-rounder. It has also been praised for its generous 500 litre boot, and dimensions that make even the taller passenger feel un-crowded.

However, there are perhaps two key areas where the Evoque is still dominant: its styling and its off-road handling. The audacious, striking looks of the Range Rover ensure this is the most stylish of the two cars – in most people's books. And on steep inclines and on muddy terrain, the Evoque puts the Macan in the shade. Indeed, in these extreme outdoor situations the average Macan owner may be glad of their car breakdown cover.

But in terms of handling, thrust, overall refinement and its talents in both urban and off road settings, the Macan is a serious threat to the Evoque.

Unless JLR keep up with the boffins at Porsche, soon there may not be quite as much overtime going at Halewood.
