The thin blue line was left red-faced on Sunday as a silver squad car bumped into a banana yellow Ferrari while performing a u-turn.
Running up a large repair bill for the Metropolitan Police was no doubt embarrassing enough for the officer involved, but the situation was worsened by the presence of numerous members of the public. One person shot a video of the BMW 5 Series police car reversing away from the 458 Spider, revealing a big hole in the supercar’s bumper.
The incident took place in West London’s Edgware Road.
The video was uploaded to the Youtube page Supercars of London where it has received thousands of hits.
One onlooker said: "I have been filming supercars for many years around Europe but this is the first time I have seen an unfortunate incident like this involving the police."
A police spokesperson commented: "We can confirm a police car was in collision with a Ferrari. No one was injured during the collision and no arrests were made."
While of little use on the busy streets of central London, the 458 Spider has a top speed of 198mph delivered by a 570bhp 4.5 litre V8 engine. However, being seen in such a vehicle is perhaps of more interest to the owner – although returning to find a police car extricating itself from one’s £250,000 ride might take the shine off such exploits.
Luckily the incident did not damage either car’s key components, so breakdown insurance cover is unlikely to have been called upon. General car insurance, however, may well have been.
