A startrescue.co.uk story...

Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost Vehicle Recovery.

Unless you live very close to one of two Peugeot dealerships in the UK, you will probably not have heard of Mu. It’s a car-sharing club based around a showroom and here’s how it works.

Say you and your partner own a Peugeot 106 city car in London but you need something bigger to go camping for a week in Scotland. Rather than overwork the poor 106 on the motorway by hauling a trailer and risk having to use your car breakdown cover, you borrow a Peugeot 4008 which has much more space from the dealership. With it you could get a Peugeot roof box, Peugeot cycle carrier and Peugeot bikes.

When you get back from the trip, you drop everything off back at the dealership and decide you will get a Peugeot scooter for the week because of expected hold-ups on your route into work. Or maybe you get a Peugeot Boxer van to help you move house, or a RCZ sports car for a special trip out. You pay a monthly premium and what you can borrow from a Peugeot dealership and for how long depends on how many points you’ve ‘bought’ with your subscription.

To me, this all seems like a fantastically good idea. Clearly to the people who have been using it at the two pilot Peugeot dealerships in London and Bristol like it too. More than a thousand people are taking part, swapping from their vehicle to another from the range that’s more convenient to the job they need it to do (pictured above).

The good news is that Mu is expanding. The next phase will be to open it up at around 20 dealerships who are selling the Peugeot i0n electric car, then launch it through dealers who already have rental operations. They’re a prime target because they are already used to preparing and offering vehicles to customers in this way. Last week I was told on the quiet that by the end of 2012 the plan is to have it in around 60 Peugeot dealerships across the UK.

I say well done Peugeot. Mu is a great idea and I’m surprised no rival as tried to follow suit yet.
