Lotus stole the Paris Motor Show with its five new models that will undoubtedly change the Norfolk company beyond recognition. But another firm unveiled an identical number of cars that could change motoring forever.
Renault took the wraps off an entire range of electric vehicles (EVs), just as it said it would two years ago. They will go on sale from next year, with the promise they will be priced the same as the equivalent diesel.
Most stylish amongst them was the Dezir (pictured), a striking red EV coupé. For the moment it’s just a concept, pointing the way to future brand styling. For example, that nose design will appear on the new Clio in 2012. But could this super-sexy car go into production itself?
Renault bosses were dropping strong hints.
My favourite innovation of the show was a clever feature on the all- new VW Passat. I’m not a massive fan of the German brand – I find its cars too conservative by half – but you have to take your hat off to whoever came up with this ingenious idea. You’re walking up to the car with your hands full so you can’t open the boot. Assuming you’re carrying the key, simply wave your foot past a sensor fitted to the underside of the back bumper and… ta-da!... the boot springs open.
Genius.
