As many of our breakdown cover customers can attest, there are lots of great reasons to head to the continent for a road trip. The weather - even now in October - is certainly one of them, along with the simple joy of experiencing different landscapes, cities and foods.
But one reason for taking a continental road trip that doesn't get mentioned so much is cheap fuel. The UK has the third most expensive diesel, and the fourth most expensive petrol - in the whole of Europe!
Fuel price comparison website drive-alive.co.uk has gauged that only the Netherlands (€1.70 /ltr), Italy (€1.78) and Norway (€1.86) are more costly than the UK's €1.61 (£1.28)*.
Norway and Italy are more expensive than the UK in the diesel stakes.
So Where Should We Go For the Cheapest Fuel?
Luxembourg and Latvia offer the cheapest petrol, at just €1.32 (£1.05), but low cost fuel can be found a little closer to home - in France. The average French price is €1.46, but the above website claims to have found it for just €1.27 in some parts of La Repulique - which compared to the average UK price represents a saving of 38 cents.
38 cents is 38 cents - but if you're filling up a 50 litre tank, the saving is a pretty impressive €19 - or £15.
Of course, finding a petrol station across the channel that boasts such a super-low price might not be so easy - and you may waste a good few litres trying to locate one!
