A startrescue.co.uk story...

Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost Breakdown Cover.

The last time I drove an Aston Martin, it was shortly after the launch of the baby in the range, the Vantage. I remember it well because I was on the M11 near Stansted Airport and giving the V8 engine a fair amount of right foot. Then a dashboard warning light came on and I had a sudden panic that I was going to be stranded on the hard shoulder and needing to use my car breakdown cover. Thankfully, the car seemed fine though I did slow down considerably.

The newest Aston Martin is like none that’s gone before. And if you look at the pictures above and think this car, the Cygnet, looks like a Toyota iQ, go to the top of the class. While you can buy an iQ for £11,000 Aston’s reworked version will set you back more than £30k. How can the company justify the price? Because its skilled craftsmen and women have taken the car apart and put it back together with all the attributes you normally associate with Aston Martin. This car has a top end interior instead of the rather plasticky one you find in the iQ.

Why has one of the world’s most respected and desirable brands risked making itself a laughing stock by launching a city car? And not even designing its own but buying in someone else’s? Because it has to get the range’s average emissions level down to meet European regulations, and because it says owners don’t always want to drive their Vantage or DB9 into the city where space is tight and the risk of damage high. Production starts in April. Have to say I’m rather looking forward to having a go.
