South Korean car giant Hyundai has unveiled a new car that can evade speed cameras.
The luxury sedan, named Genesis, may seem like the stuff of science fiction, but the car is bristling with features designed to keep drivers safe – and free of speeding tickets.
When the car detects a speed camera up ahead, the driver will be warned of its presence at a distance of 800m - they will then be reminded of the legal speed.
A second beep will sound if the car is over the legal speed limit, before the automatic brakes kick in and reduce the vehicle's velocity to below the limit as it passes the camera.
For those who are new to a particular stretch of road, the system may well be useful. But road safety campaigners may be less impressed by this intelligent piece of kit – since it might arguably encourage and enable speeding between speed cameras. If all cars had this kind of kit on board, it might be argued that speed cameras would be far less effective at reducing speeding.
Along with speed camera detection, the new car will offer lane drift assistance and automatic emergency braking.
However, initial versions of the Genesis, which will be available from October this year, will not feature camera detecting technology.
As one of the UK's leading breakdown insurers, here at startrescue.co.uk we advise staying under applicable speed limits at all times.
