Usually the only place you see a Ford Mustang in the UK is on a DVD of Peter Yate's classic Bullit. This most American of vehicles has simply never tried to win over the hearts of Brits or other Europeans – and so our roads have been Mustang free, well, forever.
That is likely to change with the latest incarnation of the affordable muscle car. However, "affordable" is quite subjective, especially when the starting price is £30,000.
But what do we get for £30K? An entry level coupe version features a 305bhp/300lb ft 2.3 litre turbo four cylinder engine paired with a six speed manual. You'll have to find another £4,000 for the 420bhp/390lb ft 5.0 litre V8, yet another £4,000 for the cabriolet version and a further £1,500 for the six-speed auto.
For the first time in the car's history we'll see independent rear suspension, along with aluminium body sections to keep the weight down.
Ford's Performance Pack is present in all versions of the car, featuring ramped up suspension and selectable steering, automatic gearbox (if installed) and stability control responses. But perhaps the most eye-opening aspect of the Performance Pack is the car's line-lock system, which enables front brake locking so that rear tyres can be burned out!
Better add another grand for spare tyres, then.
The Mustang MKVI will pit itself against rivals such as the Audi A5 and the BMW M235i in early 2015.
