Those nice people from Brussels are sticking their oar in our waters again, this time about our driving test. But to be fair, they may actually have a good point.
If EU proposals get the green light, driving school candidates will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of eco-motoring and fuel- saving techniques if they’re to get their licence. The plans have been unveiled by Siim Kallas, the EU’s Transport Commissioner, as part of a comprehensive road safety strategy for the next decade.
Eco-driving has been included in the UK’s written theory test since September 2008, but having to demonstrate the concepts on the road would be new. These could include gently squeezing the throttle to accelerate smoothly, and coming off it early to cruise towards junctions – both of which boost mpg.
Now I’m no lover of interference for the sake of it, but why shouldn’t novice drivers be taught this stuff right from the start of their driving careers? As regular readers will know, I’m a fan of timely retraining for every motorist. I believe this is another example of something that would focus a driver’s attention on the road ahead – which would improve road safety – rather than texting their mates or worrying about what they’re doing at the weekend.
