A startrescue.co.uk story...

If you want a brand new Mini, but are put off by the prices of top-of-the-range versions, then the entry-level Mini One 1.2 could be ideal. At £13,750 it is £1,550 cheaper than a Mini Cooper. But do the UK's motoring press think the saving is worth any loss in performance? We take a look at some key reviews...

Autocar

The ‘torquey’ 1.2 litre engine enjoys praise from Autocar, delivering as it does a responsive ride at various speeds. The six-speed manual gearbox also does well in this review. But less impressive are the thin tyres which detract from what is otherwise a very pretty car. Perhaps more importantly the skinny wheels reduce the car's road-holding ability when out on the B-roads, although help the car perform well in the urban environments and on the motorway. 3.5 stars.

Carbuyer

The 61.4mpg fuel consumption figure and £20 road tax is a big hit with Carbuyer, as is the spacious interior and materials which improve upon the outgoing generation substantially. Carbuyer points out that the One has not yet been tested by Euro NCAP, but if its anything like the previous version, it will get five stars.

Telegraph

The Telegraph praises the car's additional space and refinement, as well its practical plus-points. It gives the thumbs-up to a number of technological improvements as well as additional power. However, the Telegraph is not a fan of the range of expensive options. Four out of five stars.

Overall a dependable car that won’t have you reaching for your breakdown cover document too often, available for a price that won’t break your bank – so long as you’re not a fan of options!
