A startrescue.co.uk story...

Leaving work and driving home is starting to look a little more palatable now the sun is still up at 5pm. Having the pleasure of seeing the sun set for the first time in several months will no doubt be reminding many of us that Summer is just around the corner. It’s time to dust off the caravan and organise your short term European cover – as holidays are beckoning.

But in these days of austerity, many of us will be keen to keep our costs down this summer. So where are the cheapest places to go? Well, petrol is one cost that will be hard to keep down. While UK motorists do indeed pay a premium for their petrol, even petrol stations in supposedly cheap countries charge a fair bit; the cheapest you’ll find in February 2011is in Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia (around 1.20 euros per litre). The most expensive is in Norway (1.60 euros) together with other Scandinavian countries. The UK sits in the middle at around 1.40 euros per litre.

With petrol saving not so easy to come by, you’ll have to rely on the accommodation and food prices to keep your bank balance healthy. As a general rule, where there is cheap petrol there are cheap resorts, hotels and restaurants – but there are some exceptions. Greece is a very reasonable - not to mention stunningly beautiful – country to visit, and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous is a hugely rewarding place to take a driving holiday.

Other low cost destinations are to be found in Eastern Europe; Poland with its glorious old port of Gdansk and spellbinding Krakow, and the Czech Republic with its stunning capital Prague are just some of the wonders to be enjoyed this summer. All you need is your car, a full tank of fuel and your short term European breakdown cover from Start Rescue.
