A startrescue.co.uk story...

Today's bonkers car concepts are sometimes tomorrow's ubiquitous runabouts. But the Rinspeed XchangE is probably not one of those.

Aside from having a funny name, it also boasts a coffee machine and a 32 inch 4K TV screen. The front seats even swivel round so you can watch the telly in comfort.

Neither the coffee machine or the huge TV are likely to promote safe, un-distracted driving, but they will both be fine if suggestions that the XchangE is a driverless car, are true.

But until the Geneva Motor Show starts, and the XchangE is unveiled for real, we just don't know. Industry commentators don't think the machine will be able to drive itself – mainly because it is a concept car, and concept cars are usually only a shadow of their future selves.

We do know, however, that the XchangE is based on the Tesla Model S, and is perfect for those who can't bear to leave their front room for too long; because this has all that the biggest couch potato will ever need: a massive TV, a cool plexi-glass roof, a docked Windows 8 tablet – and that coffee machine we mentioned.

Indeed, if the Rinspeed XchangE (or a future version) does become driverless, passengers (since there will be no drivers) will need stuff to do.

As Rinspeed's CEO Frank M Rinderknecht says, "travelling in a driverless car will no longer require me to stare at the road, but will let me spend my time in a more meaningful way."

The cost of such a car is likely to make it fairly unattainable for most of us. We don't know for sure what that will be, but there does appear to be a Carl F Bucherer Patravi TravelTec clock on the dashboard and they’re expensive.

We also don't know when it will be available to buy – so you don't need to look up insurance or breakdown cover costs for 'bonkers electric cars' just yet.
