Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost Vehicle Recovery cover.
It could have been a day when plenty of people needed their car breakdown cover. As it turned out, I don’t think anyone did. And that’s testament to the reliability of one of the most iconic cars ever to come out of Britain, the Jaguar E-Type. This year marks its 50th anniversary; symbol of the Swinging Sixties, it made its debut at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show after it had been driven there from Coventry to prove its mettle.
A number of special events are taking place throughout this year, and I took part in one of them yesterday. It was a cavalcade of 50 E-Types driving through central London and out to Canary Wharf. It was set up to signal the start of Motorexpo, the free motor show that’s staged in the pedestrianised areas around the Docklands, and which runs until Sunday. Visit www.motorexpo.com for details. The big disappointment was the weather; it was hammering down when we set off in convoy from Hyde Park Corner, which meant none of the cabrio owners could get the roof off.
Some were half-moaning that this was the first time their cars had been out in the rain in a good few years! It also meant less people out on the streets wanting to pause and take photos of us, which is a shame because going down the Mall from Buckingham Palace, with some big Union Jacks hanging from the trees, presumably left over from the Royal Wedding, it made a great spectacle.
