A startrescue.co.uk story...

If you think Google is becoming rather prevalent in your digital life, just wait until you see the cars of the future – which may well feature one of the Californian tech giant’s Android devices.

In car entertainment looks like it may be the next technology battleground, after Google revealed it was teaming up with the likes of Audi, Honda and Hyundai in order to "speed up innovation" in the automotive sector.

But Google has competition from its old rival Apple, which has already signed a deal with BMW, GM and Honda in order to develop in-car entertainment technology.

"Driving-Optimised Experience"

Patrick Brady, director of Android engineering, wrote in a special blogpost, "Millions of people already bring Android phones and tablets into their cars, but it's not yet a driving-optimised experience.

"Wouldn't it be great if you could bring your favourite apps and music with you and use them safely with your car's built-in controls and in-dash display?"

Audi and Google unveiled some their systems at the CES Show in Las Vegas last week.

New entertainment systems will enable drivers to search maps, access music apps such as Spotify and connect with social media platforms whilst on the move.

Manufacturers, software developers and telecoms firms are among those seeking to enter what could be a very significant and lucrative market.

The addition of iPhone- or Nexus-style entertainment units in vehicles will make the modern car even more complex, but will no doubt be a must-have feature for automotive firms that wish to succeed in the coming years.

It's not yet clear if you'll one day be able to get a breakdown insurance quote with an 'in-car entertainment repair' option, but if it does happen, you'll hear about it on the startrescue.co.uk blog first!
