For those who love cars, especially the fast kind, the Festival of Speed at Goodwood is the perfect place to spend a weekend. The festival’s name alone is really a distillation of what most car fans really love about cars – namely how fast they go. So slip on your driving gloves and check your car breakdown cover at the door – it won’t be much use here…
Adrenline junkies of all kinds turned up to drive a dazzling selection of both race and road cars. A century of motoring history was represented, watched by tens of thousands of joy-filled spectators. Aussie F1 driver Mark Webber was present, as was Vitaly Petrov, the Lotus Renault driver – who treated the crowd to a cocktail of screaming engines and burnt rubber.
Ferarri fans were not to be disappointed either, with Le Mans winner Marc Gene turning up to drive the F1 Ferrari that almost won Fernando Alonso the world championship last year. Almost.
The famous (in America at least) Indy 500 was also represented, with a selection of Indy cars and associated drivers – including Dario Franchitti, Dan Wheldon and Danny Sullivan – who were here to celebrate a century of this thrilling stateside race.
Other well known faces included ex F1 ace and BBC F1 commentator Martin Brundle, who delighted in getting behind the wheel of a Le Mans Jaguar. Remembering days of old, a beaming Brundle said: ‘It’s nice to be able to rev it a bit and wave at the crowd.’ In other F1 excitement, Rene Arnoux was re-united with his turbo-charged Renault from the 1977 F1 season.
But aside from Formula One there were a great deal of sporty road cars to enjoy too. The stunning McLaren MP4-12C was on full view, as were a selection of Aston Martins, Koenigseggs and Ferarris.
