A startrescue.co.uk story...

There are a multitude of reasons why you might suffer a car breakdown, but they usually revolve around flat batteries and flat tyres. You might, then, be surprised to discover the fire risks posed by spiders to the humble motorist. The Mazda6 has been recalled in numbers exceeding 65,000 over just such a fear.

The Japanese car maker found 20 cases whereby yellow sac spiders where discovered in the model’s vent lines. According to the manufacturer, the presence of the spiders might increase the pressure on the fuel tank which in turn might lead to cracks and even fires. In answer to this, Mazda dealers will look over recalled cars, checking them for spider webs and cleaning out vent lines if required. They will also place a spring in the line to prevent any more spiders from entering the automotive giant’s popular model.

It remains unclear why the spiders were so taken by the Mazda6 model, but Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes suggested: "Perhaps yellow sac spiders like to go zoom-zoom?" in reference to the auto maker’s recent advertising campaign. There have been no known fires caused by the spiders – as yet.

The cars that are affected were purchased in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
