The Netherlands might have a reputation for having rather laid-back citizens, but when it comes to driving regulations they are as tough as anywhere else in Europe. The flat landscape, beautiful cities and high quality roads and motorways found in the Netherlands make it a great place to enjoy a driving holiday, or to pass through en route to another European destination – but there are a number of things you would be well advised to bear in mind before you go.

One of the first things you should do before you set off is ensure that your car, motorcycle or van breakdown cover is up to date, giving both yourself and your passengers peace of mind. But as well as this, you should be aware of the particular speed limits found in the Netherlands (noting that distances and speeds are of course measured in kilometres not miles) and that heavy fines or penalties are imposed upon those who break these speed limits.

All in all, the traffic regulations in the Netherlands are fairly similar to those of the UK, with a few differences: Keeping a high visibility vest on board is compulsory, as is the carriage of a warning triangle – to be used in the event of a breakdown. Keeping a fire extinguisher in your vehicle, while not compulsory, is advised by the authorities.

And finally, while the police of the Netherlands have a friendly, relaxed reputation, be under no illusions that they will enforce the traffic regulations as ardently as their British counterparts.

Please note, this is not a conclusive set of driving regulations. It is advisable to seek out further information if you are planning a driving holiday in the Netherlands this summer.
