A terrifying video has emerged recording the moment when 61 vehicles were involved in a mass pile-up on a highway in Minnesota, USA.
Most videos of motorway incidents record the aftermath, a point where emergency services have got the situation under control. This recording is rather unique, however, in that it shows not just one impact, but several – as well as the immediate aftermath.
As some of our UK breakdown insurance customers will have experienced first-hand, the chaos that ensues after a road incident can cause great alarm and panic. But such moments also show how people can come together in an emergency, helping one another out.
The man who took the video is seen – or at least heard – providing assistance to those injured in the pile-up. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries. According to the local Pioneer Press, one individual sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.
The chain-reaction pile-up took place on Mendota Bridge, where fallen snow caused the 61 vehicles, having spotted the initial incident, to skid after applying their brakes. Successive impacts can be heard on the video soundtrack, as vehicle after vehicle fails to stop on the slippery surface – that was, until they careered into the back of another vehicle.
People can be heard discussing the impacts, their minor injuries and implications for claiming insurance. The person taking the video makes a point of recording the number plates of the vehicles that may have connected with his own.
