A startrescue.co.uk story...

Here at startrescue.co.uk our breakdown cover services have been required by cars damaged in a number of ways, but seldom by leaping a raised bridge.

But that manoeuvre was attempted by one Croatian woman recently, who hit the headlines after driving her Peugeot over a raised bridge and landing on the other side.

Rather than an example of thrill seeking, the unnamed woman, 58, appears to have accidentally run a red light just before the bridge in the seaside town of Tisno was raised.

The bridge was raised to a height of 2.5m, but astonishingly the vehicle remained upright when it hit the other side.

Bridge warden Tome Mejic Sidic said of the incident: "I was shouting and gesturing her to stop but it was no use. She ignored me, went full throttle and flew across the bridge. I was convinced she'd overturn the car."

The incident, which was captured on CCTV, has been a YouTube hit, receiving over 1.6m views in 48 hours.

One eyewitness said the car looked like it was going 80km/h (50mph) and that the impact "sounded like a bomb had gone off."

Thankfully neither the driver or passenger were hurt in the incident. The car came to a stop near a cafe on the other side of the river.

The woman told police she had been blinded by the sun and had not seen the red light.

According to Tome Sidec, other vehicles have tried to cross the bridge after the red light had shown, including a tractor that did not have the requisite acceleration to make the leap.
