Filled a long-standing gap in my motoring life yesterday when I drove a Rolls-Royce for the first time. It was the Ghost, the long- anticipated ‘baby’ Rolls that’s still about the size of a Mercedes S- Class but with the kind of luxury you don’t find on regular cars.
The Ghost, yours for not much less than £200,000, is surprisingly nimble given its bulk. I put it through its paces on a very twisty private test track and was genuinely impressed with quite how ‘chuckable’ it was through the corners. My fear with these type of events is a common one for motoring journalists – you want to push the car so you can offer an opinion, but you really don’t want to be the one to put such a beautiful and valuable machine in the hedge. Thankfully one of my colleagues was a tad braver than me and chauffeured me more aggressively round for a second lap.
The attention to detail in the cabin is exquisite and well thought out. For example, you can adjust the front passenger seat from the back, just in case you haven’t quite got enough leg room already. I’m 6ft 4ins and I wasn’t complaining before I started fiddling with the buttons.
So after 12 years Rolls-Royce has been ticked off my list. Of the mainstream brands, just Lamborghini and Morgan to go.
