A startrescue.co.uk story...

Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost breakdown cover

Besides England’s failure to win the right to stage the 2018 World Cup, there’s only one story in the news right now – the weather. TV reports of drivers stranded are commonplace, either because they’ve broken down and are waiting breakdown vehicle breakdown recovery or because someone further up the road can’t get through and has unwittingly caused a blockage.

There was an interesting story put out by motoring news website Parker’s earlier in the week about the number of online searches for 4x4s. Editor Kieren Puffett, someone I know very well, was quoted as saying: “The early snow has caught many of us off guard and it now seems the long winters are prompting more motorists to consider a 4x4.”

All well and good, but does it not seem a bit extreme to buy a whole car just to cope with a few weeks of bad weather? If we all had piles of cash burning holes in our pockets, it’s the sensible thing to do, but that’s hardly the case, is it? My thoughts are probably cheaper than buying a 4 x 4, buy cold weather tyres to keep your grip, service your car to ensure it is running correctly and buy breakdown cover through startrescue.co.uk where all cover levels are reasonably priced in case you ever need vehicle recovery.

I’ve mentioned this before, and I will probably do so again before we’re reaching for the suntan lotion, but a decent set of winter tyres will do wonders for your on-road performance. The fact people are searching online for 4x4s – rather than where to buy the cheapest cold-weather rubber – simply illustrates how little is know about them, and how much of an education job there is to do. I’ve got some on my wife’s Ford Focus and we’ve got plenty of grip, and I live in rural Suffolk where we don’t see gritters. Visit www.whywintertyres.co.uk to find out more.
