Aprilia, the inventors of the naked superbike class, is looking to muscle out increasing competition with its Tuono. In its sights are KTM’s 1290 Super Duke R, BMW's S1000R and Ducati's Monster 1200. So what do the key voices in Britain's motoring press have to say about this new 'super-naked'?
The Telegraph praises the machine's highly entertaining nature, but also points out it can be adequately practical in day-to-day use. As competition increases in this sector, which until 2002 did not even exist, Aprilia is apparently way out in front. The heavy price tag of £12,432 is forgiven thanks to the bike's impressive performance and electronic sophistication. 5/5 stars.
UltimateMotorcycling.Com lauds the 2014 Tuono's superb power plant, arguing this aspect of the bike separates it from the competition. Chassis, brakes and suspension, UM says, are comparable across the available superbike models – but it is the engine architecture where the real battleground is – a battleground on which Aprilia is currently reigning supreme. The reviewer gives the new Tuono top marks.
CycleWorld.Com discusses the bike's impressive ABS software, which it suggests is the most advanced available. In wet conditions, this powerful system ensures that just the right amount of tyre slippage occurs on corners. Overall the bike is much-loved in this review for its day-to-day riding ability as well as its performance on the open road. Another rave review.
