Unlike many luxury car makers, Aston Martin has not yet unveiled plans to build an SUV – but that could change in the near future, according to key figures inside the company.
Aston Martin’s product manager, Andy Haslam, said: "If we had the resources, we'd do it."
He also pointed out that many Aston Martin DB9 owners also have a Range Rover, suggesting that customer demand already exists.
The company’s CEO, Ulrich Bez, echoed the desire to add an SUV model to the hundred-year-old carmaker’s line-up.
The success of Porsche’s Cayenne is too big to ignore, and has inspired numerous luxury car makers to enter this lucrative market. Bentley, Jaguar and Maserati have all confirmed they will be launching SUV models in the coming years.
With Range Rover already enjoying huge success with its Evoque SUV model, Aston Martin is one of the few luxury carmakers with British heritage not to have an SUV in the pipeline.
Even Rolls Royce may be entering the market, according to recent media reports.
As always, the development of such a model requires finance, and after posting a £25m loss recently, Aston Martin may not seem in an ideal financial shape to develop an SUV. However, it is receiving £150m a year from investment group Investindustrial – in return for a 37.5 per cent share – and has signed a deal with Mercedes Benz subsidiary AMG, which will provide bespoke engines to Aston Martin for a five per cent stake.
While the company may have many different shareholders now, it should have the capital and technical know-how required to develop an SUV that meets the high standards of its sports car line-up – and matches the prowess of SUVs such as the Evoque and the Cayenne.
