It’s always good to know your car is well-maintained and can go the distance. And for added peace of mind, regular breakdown cover or personalised breakdown cover can help. But one way of feeling extra secure about your car’s ability to stay on the road, is a long warranty.
Relatively few car manufacturers offer long warranties, but the trend is increasing. Korean favourites Hyundai and Kia are well-known for their long warranties, and both Toyota and Dacia now offer 5 year guarantees. The Dacia warranty costs an additional £395.
But it’s important to bear in mind that such warranties are only valid if serviced by approved dealers of the brand in question. Warranties will not be honoured if you let your nearest non-dealer garage tinker under your hood.
A warranty of 5 years is a very attractive proposition for cost-conscious car buyers who are being ever-more enticed by hard-wearing, reliable brands. But this begs the question: why aren’t companies like Volkswagen and Ford offering similar warranties? If Dacia can stand up to such a protracted guarantee, then surely these more established and respected brands can too?
From the buyer’s viewpoint, a long warranty suggests a very high build quality in the first instance, but also gives reassurance that if something goes wrong in the first few years, they won’t have to fork out for huge repair bills. Perhaps the big German and American brands will catch on soon.
