Wheel clamping on private land in England and Wales became illegal on the 1st of October, a change which has the potential to make the parking laws fairer to motorists.
A recent survey conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists revealed that 91 per cent of motorists are not aware of the new changes. The survey, which was taken by
2066 motorists, also revealed that half did not know there was a difference between receiving a parking ticket from a private company and receiving one from a local authority. It also revealed that 89 per cent were unaware of a new independent appeals service for those who want to contest a parking ticket given on private land.
The survey also revealed that 50 per cent of motorists don't know that the DVLA were obliged to sell drivers' vehicle licence information to private parking firms so they can locate motorists who have not paid their tickets. 72 per cent of respondents thought this practice was unacceptable.
10 per cent of people believed their parking tickets to be unfair, while 60 per cent of those receiving tickets opted to pay the fines.
There has been a substantial amount of criticism aimed at the government for not making the new changes clear to motorists.
