Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost Breakdown Cover
The temperature is the right side of zero during the day, the bulk of the snow has gone, and so the inquest begins. Further to my posting of last week – when I revealed how flat batteries were the number one reason for needing to use your car breakdown cover – more details of the problem-causing issues have emerged. It seems that ‘wipers frozen to the windscreen’ was right up there. Seriously? I’m genuinely stunned! Are drivers really so pathetically helpless and lacking in resourcefulness that they can’t work out how to release their wipers? On what are the obviously going to be the busiest days of the year, which means the longest waits, would you really call out the vehicle breakdown recovery services for that? Unless I’m missing the point surely firing up the car’s engine and aiming some warm air at the inside of the windscreen for 10 minutes will defrost your wipers? It’s enough to clear the windscreen. Tepid water would also work. What about your de-icer? You know, it’s the bottle of stuff in the door bin. Not there? Try the glovebox. Oh, I see. You haven’t got any because you weren’t prepared for the cold weather. Yes, it was such a surprise when it came so suddenly, wasn’t it? Come on, drivers of Britain! Pull yourselves together! Take the time now, while the weather is better, to sort out your car. De-icer and a scraper should be the minimum you carry.
