While choosing a car that won’t have you calling for car breakdown cover help on a regular basis is a key consideration when choosing a car, so is safety. In recent decades safety levels in cars have achieved impressive heights, but the current king of automotive safety is undoubtedly the Volvo V40.
NCAP’s latest round of safety tests awarded the Volvo V40 a full 5-star rating for four particular areas of passenger and pedestrian safety, and an overall score that makes it the safest car on the road. The areas tested were adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.
It might not come as a surprise that the V40 got 75% for child occupant protection, 100% for safety assist and 98% for adult occupant protection. But what might surprise you is the 88% rating for pedestrian protection. If the car detects that a pedestrian has been struck, the bonnet is lifted and an exterior airbag is inflated. The A-pillars of the car are also covered by the bag, giving greater protection for the given pedestrian’s head.
5 star ratings were also awarded to the Kia Cee’d, the Ford B-Max with its sliding rear doors, and the Audi A3. None of these, however, achieved an overall score higher than the V40.
It seems one can now buy a slice of Sweden’s highly civilised society in the shape of a car – keeping not only passengers safe, but pedestrians too.
