For some of some of us, fuel prices surpassing the £1.20 barrier was painful enough. For many more, the fact that prices rose past the £1.30 mark were even more shocking. But now, with prices breaking through the£ 1.40p barrier on average, it feels to many motorists as if fuel prices are out of control.
The news is bad enough for those who use their cars mainly for recreation, but for those who really need them, it will be all the more hard to take. People who live in the countryside or who need their car to do their job, will be badly hit. The worse thing is arguably that prices may continue to rise.
Sanctions on Iran, which have ruled out oil reaching Western markets, are seen as a major reason for the rise. Others though, will be saying the government is not doing enough to help hard-up UK motorists. The Chancellor says that in future, oil prices will not rise beyond inflation, but this will do little to assuage the concerns of small businesses and ordinary people up and down the country.
The fact that Mr. Osborne reduced tax last week for those earning more than £150,000, will no doubt make the £1.40 price rise even more grating.
