Turkey is not seen by many motorists as the ideal place to take a road trip, but if you take the time to see what it offers, you may be pleasantly surprised. If you’re a lover of kebabs, then this is where you’ll find the world’s very best. But even if you’re not, you’re sure to find that this staggeringly pretty country has lots more to offer.
In terms of views, the country was made for the road trip. Pine clad mountains and sprawling vinyards ensure you’ll always have something beautiful to look at. And then there’s the coastline. Turkey offers some of the finest beaches in Europe, with golden sand and clean blue water pretty much as standard.
But going to the beach here doesn’t mean you have to go to an overcrowded resort like Marmaris (although you can if you wish). You can find countless and seldom visited coastal beauty spots in Turkey – and by driving to Turkey in your car you’ll be able to reach a great many of them.
Then we come to the roads. They’re not the best, mainly due to poor maintenance. But they’re made all the more off-putting because locals tend to drive in blissful ignorance of the speed limits or traffic regulations. But the risk and the occasional bump in the road are certainly worth the pleasure you are sure to derive from this country.
If you’re thinking about taking your vehicle to Turkey this year, make sure you’ve got your short term European breakdown cover bang up to date. We have a policy that covers you west of the Bosphorus.
