The original Top Gear of the early 90s was about real cars, for regular people, and one of the reasons it eventually got overhauled in such a dramatic way was that it was a bit tedious to watch.
Indeed, the latest episode of Top Gear appears to be as far from the original version as possible. Episode 2 offered up a review of something called a BAC Mono, which hurtled round the famous TG test track in the second best time ever. Then came the taxi stock car race, which, even though the cars taking part were fairly low-cost, ended up in a level of destruction that must have had a few licence fee payers twitching at the ostentatiousness of it all.
Film Director Ron Howard appeared for the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment, which was where the only sign of a cheapish car was seen.
But the big bucks were on display soon afterwards, as a soon-to-be-delirious Clarkson got behind the wheel of the latest Ferrari – the F12 – available to anyone with £240,000 spare.
It’s hard not to enjoy the rambunctious automotive silliness of Clarkson and co, whether they’re testing the latest Italian supercar, or smashing up taxis for fun. One wonders though, if any of them can find an annual breakdown cover provider who will touch them!
But the big question is: was it better than last week’s episode? The press seemed to think so, but what did you think? As ever, feel free to leave your comments below.
