The car and the film have had a relationship that stretches back to the beginnings of both products, the one having been featured in the other countless times.
The success of any movie is often about taking something a viewer is very familiar with, almost to a mundane degree, and twisting its usage into something far more exciting or unusual.
When it comes to cars, most of this twisting involves high speed car chases, and, inevitably, the odd crash. Breakdown cover is of no interest to most movie drivers – all they need is the number of the nearest scrapyard.
So what are the top car movies of all time?
It’s a hard question to answer, since there is such a huge number of great car films to choose from. But let’s have a go...
Bullit
Even though this movie was filmed way back in the 1960s, many people hold it up as one of the best car films simply because of its high octane car chase up and down the very cinematic backdrop of San Francisco.
Add Steve McQueen and you have a very cool film indeed.
The Italian Job
Remade more recently with arguably less success, the original Italian Job was a true cinematic pleasure, with a whole host of impressive stunts that had never been seen on-screen before.
The simple fact that these diminutive British cars helped pull off such a large-scale heist, only added to the fun.
The Fast and the Furious
I have to mention this one, since it just keeps coming back and we just keep watching it – in all its guises.
Fast Five is the most recent offering from the popular franchise, and having grossed 200,000,000 dollars in the USA alone, it looks quite likely that we’ll see another.
Very silly, but a lot of fun.
