Futuristic car designs can take many forms, and can range from vehicles that are probably never going to see the light of day, through to prototypes that are going to be in production in the near future. With these criteria in mind, some of the top ten futuristic car designs of 2013 include both forthcoming models like the Lexus RCF and the BMW i8, and more outlandish cars like the Flash No-1 and the Diamante Concept Car. Why, then, are these car designs so special?
1 - Flash No-1
Part of a series of designs for future cars commissioned by Hyundai, Flash No-1 is technically a hybrid racing and flying machine. Designed by Ahn Jeong Ho, the Flash No-1 is solar powered with a lightweight magnesium shell, and can hover just above the ground, acting as a flying car. Unfortunately, the Flash No-1 is still a design, rather than a reality, at present.
2 - Lexus RCF
This future Lexus represents an extension of the IS series to include a high end coupe, which will adapt much of the design work that Lexus are using with their F Sport variants. The RCF is expected to have a multilink rear set up, a 3.5 litre V6 engine, and may be on the road by 2015.
3 - Bugatti 57 Atlantic
A car designed by Bruno Delussu, the Bugatti 57 Atlantic derives some of its stylistic influences from Jaguar - the two seater, sleekly shaped Atlantic is produced to be as aerodynamic as possible, and puts more weight onto its front wheels.
4 - BMW M3 Sedan
Another car that’s going to be appearing in the near future, the BMW M3 Sedan is rumoured to feature a straight six engines and a super lightweight, carbon fibre shell, as well as twin turbochargers; expect to see this one in 2015.
5 - Nissan Motivity 400C
A pod shaped car, the Motivity 400CC depends on a design scheme where its main part is shaped like a cockpit; this approach affords lower air resistance, as well as power saving acceleration.
6 - Peugeot Angel
Designed to act as a vehicle with a central pod and oversized wheels, the concept behind the Peugeot Angel involves converting its rear wheels to provide magnetic field circulation, causing the back of the car to levitate while being driven.
7 - BMW i8
While BMW’s i series of electric cars is soon to be released through the BMW i3 all electric car, it’s this hybrid that shows some serious future thinking; with 349 hp, the i8 is a super fast hybrid that can deliver significant energy savings and low emissions.
8 - Volkswagen Design Vision GTI Concept
This Volkswagen concept features a design that involves reducing the traditional size of a GTI to include a more flowing design, and DG paddle shifters that work with a 3.0 litre V6 engine to create a highly compact sports car.
9 - Diamante Concept Car
Produced as part of a design project, the Diamante Concept Car takes a Lamborghini foundation, and creates a future car intended for an imagined 2023; the Diamante includes movable wings, and twin micro jet engines powered by bio-diesel and other renewable, eco friendly fuels.
10 - Toyota i-Road
This concept car from Toyota represents a further example of the Japanese manufacturer’s commitment to energy innovations; the i-Road is a three wheeled personal car that can lean like a motorcycle, and can be run as an all electric vehicle with zero emissions.
