Getting stranded in your car due to icy conditions, or suffering a breakdown in the snow is not a pleasant experience. But there are a number of simple precautions you can take to ensure you’re ready to take on the worst that winter throws at you.
1. Keep as many thick blankets in your car as you have passengers – this simple extra layer can make a big difference if you get stranded or have to await roadside assistance.
2. A shovel can work miracles in getting you free of ice, so consider keeping one in the car. Extendible versions can use less storage space.
3. Ensure your car is serviced. If the internals of your engine get clogged up, it can put extra strain on your battery when starting.
4. Check the tread depth of your tyres. They should be at least 3mm deep in order to obtain a suitable grip.
5. Prevent your car doors from sticking by using special spray. Alternatively save money by using a petroleum jelly product such as Vaseline.
6. Spray the locks of your doors and other mechanisms to ensure they are useable in freezing conditions.
7. Keep a phone charger in your car so you can call for assistance if needed.
8. If your wipers are squeaking, check to see if they are damaged. If not, clean them with methylated spirit or vinegar. Also ensure your wash system is topped up with high concentration liquid – this should prevent freezing.
9. Keep your fuel levels high, as you may need to keep the engine running in order to stay warm when stationary.
10. And finally, ensure your UK or European breakdown cover is still active, in case you need roadside assistance.
