The idea of going on an extended motorcycle trip is one that many motorcycle owners wish to experience. The freedom of the open road and the simple joy of speed over a long period of time are undeniably attractive, but it pays to be as prepared as possible before you set out. Here are a few tips for making your motorcycle road trip a successful one.
Try to learn the basics about your bike, and how to fix any common or basic problems that might arise. You should be able to check the oil and tyre pressure, as well as adjust the chain. You should buy, read and keep with you a repair manual.
Ensure you take an adequate, high quality tool kit. A small socket wrench set is a good idea, together with an adjustable wrench, a suspension adjustment wrench, a spark plug wrench, a tyre gauge and a set of allen wrenches.
Get to know your bike as best you can. Ensure you know the range of the fuel tank as well as how to safely attach luggage. Bear in mind that a heavily loaded bike will handle differently than without any additional load. It’s a good idea to take a test drive with some weight on the bike, so you can get used to it.
Above all, plan your trip thoroughly. You can still enjoy the spontaneity of travel and still plan. Look over the relevant maps and get a good idea of your route long before you set off. Work out where you will stop and consider booking accommodation well in advance.
Perhaps the best advice of all is: ensure your motorbike breakdown cover is fully up to date. This will give you added peace of mind so you can enjoy your trip even more.
