SUVs, Chelsea tractors, 4x4s. You either love them or you hate them. If you love them you probably have one, and if you hate them you probably find your morning route to work is seriously impeded by several of them. But despite a large section of society harbouring real disdain for SUVs (and possibly their owners), there’s a corresponding number who believe they offer the only realistic way to deliver their child to school.
And now there’s another one, in the form the Lexus 450h. But this one is a little less hateable than some of the gas guzzlers out there, since it is armed with two Earth-friendly electric engines alongside its obligatory 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine. This hybrid offers a genuinely impressive CO2 output of 145g/km. Its green credentials are tempered by the serious muscle under the bonnet, enabling 0-62mph acceleration in only 7.8 seconds, and a top speed of 124mph. Combined fuel consumption is a respectable 44.8mph.
No matter how offensive you find SUVs, this one is a little less offensive. And by all accounts from the motoring press, this one might convert even the most hardened Chelsea tractor hater, such is the comfort and quietness of the RX 450h’s ride. It also boasts a superb stereo which should drown out the sound of angry beeps from smaller, cheaper vehicles.
If you have a spare £43,665 after you’ve paid your child’s school fees (and your startrescue.co.uk car breakdown cover), then the Lexus RX 450h could be for you.
